Remote Work

Digital Nomad in Sri Lanka: Remote Work Guide 2026

Sri Lanka is an emerging digital nomad destination. Colombo has a growing coworking scene and reliable infrastructure. Galle's Fort has become a quietly functional place to base yourself for a few months. Ella and Arugam Bay attract short-stay nomads looking for slower pace and scenery alongside their screens.

The main limitation is the visa. Sri Lanka does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. The standard ETA grants 30 days, extendable twice to a maximum of 6 months from arrival. The time zone (UTC+5:30) overlaps well with European mornings and Middle Eastern business hours. Internet quality is improving — Colombo and Galle have consistent 50–150 Mbps in good cafes; rural areas are patchier.

Visa & Practicalities

ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

Most Western nationalities apply online at eta.gov.lk — approximately $35–50 USD, approved within 24–72 hours. Grants 30 days on arrival, extendable to 3 months initially, then a further 3 months at the Department of Immigration. Maximum stay is 6 months from first entry. No dedicated digital nomad visa exists.

SIM Cards

Dialog has the best 4G coverage nationally, including hill country and coastal areas. Mobitel and Hutch are alternatives. Buy at Bandaranaike airport on arrival — tourist SIMs with 10–30GB data cost LKR 1,500–3,000 ($5–10) for 30 days. eSIM options (Airalo, Holafly) available from $8–15 USD.

Internet & Coworking

Colombo has the most established coworking scene — TRACE Expert City, CO-LAB, and Impact Hub are the main options. Day passes LKR 1,500–3,000 ($5–10); monthly memberships LKR 15,000–30,000 ($50–100). Galle and Kandy have fewer formal coworking spaces but several cafes with reliable 50–100 Mbps Wi-Fi. Ella cafes are generally 20–50 Mbps.

Visa Extensions

Extensions are handled at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo (Battaramulla). The process is bureaucratic — plan a full day. First extension: 3 months. Second extension: additional 3 months to reach the 6-month cap. Documents typically required: passport, photos, proof of accommodation, onward travel evidence, and funds proof. Visa run options exist (India, Maldives) but re-entry is not guaranteed if you have already extended.
