Hotels in Sri Lanka: Where to Stay in Every City

Sri Lanka's accommodation range spans colonial plantation bungalows in the hill country, boutique beach lodges on the southern coast, and family-run guesthouses in every town. At the top end, brands like Aman and Shangri-La operate here; at the budget end, a clean room with breakfast in Ella or Kandy runs $20–40 per night.

Location matters more in Sri Lanka than in most countries. The south coast has a distinct season pattern from the east — checking seasonal conditions before booking is important. We have written detailed where-to-stay guides for all cities covered on this site.

Types of Accommodation

Colonial Heritage Hotels

Sri Lanka's colonial era left behind a legacy of grand hotels — converted plantation estates in the hill country, Dutch fort guesthouses in Galle, and Colombo's Victorian-era grand hotels. These properties offer character and setting that modern chain hotels cannot replicate.

Beach Resorts

The southern and eastern coasts have significant resort infrastructure. Mirissa, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, and Tangalle concentrate the southern beach properties. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay serve the east. Quality ranges from boutique eco-lodges to international five-star brands.

Budget Guesthouses

Family-run guesthouses are the backbone of Sri Lanka's budget accommodation scene. Clean, personally managed, and often including breakfast, they cost $15–40 per night in most cities. Ella, Kandy, and Negombo have particularly strong budget guesthouse networks.

Tea Estate Bungalows

A uniquely Sri Lankan option — former tea estate bungalows in the hill country around Nuwara Eliya and Haputale converted into small boutique stays. Set among working plantations with views over the terraced hills. Often require advance booking; these fill quickly.
