What the numbers mean
- Currency: All figures are in US dollars, approximately USD 1 = LKR 300 as of 2026. Rates move, so check before you travel.
- Accommodation: Dorm beds and basic guesthouses run approximately $10-25 a night; air-conditioned mid-range rooms $40-80, as of 2026. Prices rise sharply in peak season (December to March on the south and west coasts).
- Food: Rice and curry at a local kadev costs approximately $1-2 a plate. A meal at a tourist-facing restaurant is about $5-13. Daily figures above assume three meals.
- Activities: Sigiriya costs approximately $35 for foreign adults, Yala safaris approximately $65-85 per person all-in, and whale watching in Mirissa $30-55. Fees change often, so treat these as estimates.
- Transport: Trains and buses are very cheap (Colombo to Kandy in second class is about $1-2). Tuk-tuks and a private driver push the daily average up.
- Not included: International flights, the ETA visa fee and travel insurance. Budget those separately.
