Between July and October each year, hundreds of wild Sri Lankan elephants converge on the shores of Minneriya Tank — an ancient irrigation reservoir in the North Central Province. At peak numbers, 200–300 elephants gather in a single location: herds of females and calves, young males jostling at the edges, and large tuskers moving through the grass. It is the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world.
The phenomenon is seasonal and driven by water. As the dry season tightens and smaller water sources dry up, elephants across a vast area funnel toward the permanent water of the tank. The gathering isn’t a migration in the traditional sense — these animals live in the surrounding forests year-round — but the concentration of numbers is extraordinary.
When to Go
Peak season: August and September. The tank levels are at their lowest, vegetation around the banks is minimal (maximising visibility), and elephant numbers are highest. September often sees the largest single-day gatherings.
Good season: July and October. Numbers build through July and taper in October as rains begin to refill smaller water sources.
Off-season: November–June. The gathering disperses. Minneriya still holds elephants year-round but not in these concentrations.
Minneriya vs Kaudulla
Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks are adjacent and share the same elephant population — the animals move between both parks freely. When water levels at Minneriya are very low late in the dry season, large numbers sometimes shift to Kaudulla instead. Local guides track the movements daily.
When booking a safari, ask your operator which park is currently producing the better sightings. The answer changes week to week. Both parks are accessed from Habarana or Giritale.
How to Visit
All park visits require a licensed jeep and registered guide. Entry in your own vehicle is not permitted.
Morning drives (5:30–6am departure) and afternoon drives (2:30–3pm) are the standard options. The elephant gathering typically builds through the afternoon, with the largest numbers visible in the late afternoon around 4–5pm as the heat eases. Afternoon drives are generally more productive for the gathering.
Jeep costs: LKR 8,000–12,000 per jeep, split between passengers. Entry fees for foreigners add approximately USD $15–20 per person. Total cost per person in a group of 4–6: around $25–40.
Jeeps are available in Habarana (the main hub), Sigiriya, and Giritale. Most Sigiriya-based accommodation can arrange morning or afternoon drives to Minneriya — it’s only 45 minutes from Sigiriya village.
What Else to Expect
The gathering is the headline but Minneriya has other wildlife:
- Sloth bears: occasionally spotted, particularly around dusk
- Spotted deer (axis deer): abundant throughout the park
- Painted storks and open-billed storks: hundreds in the shallows of the tank
- Grey langur monkeys: common in the tree line
- Mugger crocodiles: present in the tank and waterways
- Toque macaques: smaller monkeys, active near the vehicle tracks
Bird watching in Minneriya is also productive: the tank’s shallows attract waders, raptors hunt over open grassland, and the forest edges hold kingfishers, bee-eaters, and rollers.
Practical Notes
Combine with Sigiriya: Minneriya is 45 minutes from Sigiriya and 30 minutes from Polonnaruwa. Most travellers combine a Cultural Triangle visit (Sigiriya and/or Polonnaruwa) with an afternoon elephant safari. This is the most time-efficient approach.
Don’t approach elephants on foot: the elephants are wild and have no habituation to humans on foot. Stay in the jeep at all times. Incidents with elephants are rare in the parks but do occur when guides allow unsafe approaches.
Dust: the dry season that concentrates elephants also generates significant dust from jeep tracks. A buff or scarf for the neck and face, and a dust cover for camera equipment, is worthwhile.
Photography: a 200–400mm lens is useful for distant shots. In good afternoon light with elephants in open grassland, even 150mm produces usable images. A monopod or beanbag helps with vibration from the jeep.
