Where to Stay for Horton Plains: Nuwara Eliya and Ohiya Accommodation

There are no lodges or hotels inside Horton Plains National Park. The two practical bases for a park visit are Nuwara Eliya (35km away) and Haputale (15km away). For the very early morning arrival that World’s End requires, Ohiya village — 10km from the park gate on the rail line — is a third option used by some travellers.

Nuwara Eliya: The Main Base

Nuwara Eliya is 35km northeast of the park, approximately 60 minutes by vehicle. It is the most common base for Horton Plains visits because it has the widest range of accommodation, restaurants, and transport connections. The town sits at 1,868 metres and has a permanently cool climate — the British colonial settlement that gave it the nickname “Little England” was not entirely fanciful. Budget: LKR 4,000–8,000

A number of small guesthouses on the main streets and the roads above the town centre offer rooms at this price point. Raj’s Rest and similar small family-run guesthouses near the Gregory Lake area have simple rooms, hot water, and breakfast options.

The budget category in Nuwara Eliya is a step up from what you’d find in warmer beach towns — altitude means blankets, hot water, and heating matter in a way they don’t at sea level. Check that hot water is reliably available.

Mid-Range: LKR 8,000–18,000

Sunhill Tourist Inn near the racecourse has clean rooms, air conditioning (usually needed as heating rather than cooling), and a reasonable restaurant. Around LKR 10,000–14,000 per night as of 2026.

Greens Hotel on Kandy Road is a reliable mid-range option with good service and a location that makes the early morning Horton Plains departure straightforward. Rates around LKR 12,000–18,000 as of 2026.

Colonial Hotels: LKR 18,000–35,000

Nuwara Eliya has two colonial-era properties worth the price premium for their architecture and character:

The Grand Hotel is the most photographed colonial building in Nuwara Eliya — the Tudor-style facade and formal garden visible from the main road are from the 1891 original construction. The hotel has been updated but retains period furnishings, a wood-panelled bar, and formal dining room. Rates from approximately LKR 20,000–35,000 per night as of 2026. Book ahead — it fills during racing season (April) and public holidays.

The Hill Club is a members’ club hotel originally established for British planters. Non-members can stay in the guest rooms and use the dining room, snooker room, and library. The atmosphere is genuinely colonial — jackets are required for dinner. Rates from approximately LKR 18,000–30,000 per night as of 2026.

For visitors interested in the hill country’s colonial history, staying at one of these properties adds context that a standard hotel cannot.

Haputale: The Closer Base

Haputale is 15km from Horton Plains, roughly 30 minutes by vehicle. It is a small, predominantly Tamil town on a ridge at 1,431 metres, with long views over the lowland plains on both sides. It has fewer accommodation options than Nuwara Eliya but a more authentic local character.

Leisure Mount Guest House and similar small guesthouses along Haputale’s main street offer clean rooms from LKR 3,500–6,500 as of 2026. Breakfast is usually included or available. The town has enough local restaurants to eat well at low cost.

The advantage of Haputale over Nuwara Eliya is simply proximity and convenience for the early morning Horton Plains departure: 15km from the park gate means a 6am departure from Haputale still gets you there at opening time with time to spare.

The train from Colombo stops at Haputale, which makes it an easy option for travellers coming directly from the west by rail. The Colombo Fort–Badulla overnight train passes through in the early hours.

Ohiya: The Closest Option

Ohiya village, on the Colombo–Badulla rail line, is 10km from the Horton Plains park gate. The Ohiya Rest House (a basic SLTDA-category rest house) has simple rooms for travellers who want to arrive the night before and walk or get a tuk-tuk to the park at 6am.

Accommodation here is basic — functional beds, shared or simple private bathrooms. It is primarily used by visitors arriving on the overnight train from Colombo who want to avoid an early morning tuk-tuk from Nuwara Eliya. Confirm availability before planning around it.

A tuk-tuk from Ohiya to the park gate costs approximately LKR 500–800 as of 2026.

Practical Notes

• Book in advance during April (Nuwara Eliya racing season) and Sri Lankan public holidays — the town fills completely
