The Galle Literary Festival takes place inside the walls of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast. Held each January since 2007, it is one of Asia’s most distinctive literary festivals — the setting of Dutch colonial architecture, rampart walks, and the Indian Ocean horizon makes it unlike any comparable event in the region.

2027 dates: The official dates for the 2027 edition have not yet been announced. Check galleliteraryfestival.com for confirmed dates and programme information closer to the event.

What to Expect

The four-day programme brings together international and South Asian authors, journalists, historians, and thinkers for readings, panel discussions, interviews, and workshops. Past participants have included Booker Prize winners, Nobel laureates, and prominent writers from Sri Lanka, India, the UK, and the United States. The programme is published on the official website (galleliteraryfestival.com) a few months before the event.

Events are held across venues within the Fort: the Amangalla hotel courtyard, the Dutch Reformed Church, the National Museum, small gallery spaces, and open-air stages on the ramparts. Some sessions accommodate 30 people; the headline events fill spaces of a few hundred. The intimate scale means good access to speakers that would be hard to reach at larger international festivals.

Beyond formal events, the Fort buzzes during festival week. Bookshops stock signed editions, cafes host informal author gatherings, and the lanes around the ramparts are more active than at any other point in the year.

Tickets and Booking

A festival pass covers all sessions across the four days; day passes are usually also available. Prices as of recent years have ranged from approximately USD 30 for a day pass to USD 100 for a full festival pass. Specific sessions with headline authors are sometimes allocated by ballot. Check the official site for the current year’s pricing and ticketing structure — they release details from around October each year.

Getting There and Staying

Galle is 120 km south of Colombo, roughly two hours by car or the coastal train from Colombo Fort station. The train journey is scenic and worth taking if time allows — we outline it in our scenic train routes guide. Accommodation inside the Fort is limited and sells out months before the festival. Budget stays are available in the New Town outside the Fort walls. Book early if you intend to stay in Galle during the festival week.

January is a reliably dry month on the south-west coast, making it one of the more comfortable times to visit the region.
