The dates for Sri Lanka’s most celebrated festival have been confirmed: the Kandy Esala Perahera will run from 18 to 28 August 2026, with the grandest processions taking place in the final five nights.

What the Perahera involves

The festival is a 10-night Buddhist pageant held in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism’s most venerated objects, housed at the Kandy Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Each night a procession leaves the temple complex and moves through the streets of Kandy accompanied by costumed elephants, Kandyan dancers, drummers, fire performers, and torch carriers. The spectacle grows in scale night by night, reaching its peak during the Randoli Perahera — the final five nights from approximately 23 to 27 August.

The Daytime Perahera on 28 August marks the ceremonial end of the festival. This morning procession is shorter than the night events but still impressive and draws large crowds to Kandy.

Why 2026 matters

This year’s Perahera falls during a period of strong visitor demand for Sri Lanka. August is already a popular month for travellers seeking an alternative to the wetter southwest coast, and the festival amplifies that pressure significantly. Hotels, guesthouses, and boutique properties within walking distance of the Temple have been reporting limited availability since May. If you are planning to be in Kandy for the final nights of the Perahera, you should book accommodation immediately.

What to know before you go

  • Viewpoint tickets: Grandstands and reserved viewing areas along the procession route are sold in advance. Queue positions on the open street are free but form several hours before the procession begins.
  • Crowds: The Randoli Perahera nights draw tens of thousands of people. Arrive early, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered when near the temple precinct), and keep valuables secured.
  • Duration: Processions typically begin between 20:00 and 21:00 and run for two to three hours. Check local confirmation closer to the date — timings can shift.
  • Getting there: Kandy is roughly three hours by train from Colombo. The scenic rail journey is pleasant but book seats in advance during August. Buses run more frequently but are slower.
