Ella’s position on a ridge in the Uva Highlands, at 1,041m elevation, puts several worthwhile hikes within reach of the town. The terrain ranges from easy paved paths through tea estates to rough forest scrambles. All can be done without specialist equipment, but footwear matters — grippy trail shoes or sturdy trainers at minimum.

Go early. Cloud builds from around 10am on most days and the views — which are the point — disappear. An early start by 6–7am for longer hikes is not excessive.

Little Adam’s Peak

Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 2–2.5 hours return
Start point: Near 98 Acres Resort or Zion View restaurant (15 min tuk-tuk from Ella, ~LKR 200)

The path to Little Adam’s Peak runs through a working tea estate before climbing a paved staircase to the summit ridge at roughly 1,141m. Most of the ascent is on steps or a well-maintained path, making it suitable for most fitness levels including those who don’t hike regularly. No guide is needed.

At the top, the views open over Ella Gap and south toward the dry zone plains, with Ella town visible below and the surrounding hills covered in tea. On clear mornings the view is excellent; by late morning cloud typically closes in from the east.

Best time to go: 6:30–8am. Bring water; no food or drink sellers are on the trail itself.

Ella Rock

Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
Duration: 3.5–4.5 hours return
Start point: Ella railway station

Ella Rock (approx. 1,420m) is the harder of Ella’s two main hikes and considerably more rewarding on a clear day. The trail begins at Ella station — follow the railway tracks south for about 20 minutes, then look for a marked turning on the right leading uphill into the forest.

The mid-section is a forested climb; the final approach to the summit involves some scrambling over rock. The path is not consistently marked and it is easy to take a wrong turn, particularly in mist. Downloading an offline map (Maps.me or Gaia GPS) before leaving helps. A local guide is a reasonable option for a first attempt — guides are available in Ella town for around LKR 2,000–3,000 for the full hike.

From the summit, the view is roughly 360°: Ella town below, the Ella Gap to the south, and the surrounding ridges. On a clear day this is one of the best viewpoints in the hill country.

Do not walk on the railway tracks beyond what is needed to reach the trailhead. Trains use the line throughout the day.

Ravana Ella Cascade Trail

Difficulty: Very Easy
Duration: 30 minutes return
Start point: Ravana Falls car park, 6km south of Ella on A23 (LKR 100 entry)

This is less a hike and more a short walk. From the main road pullout where the falls are visible, a path leads to the base of the 25m waterfall and the pool beneath it. A secondary path climbs above the falls to Ravana’s Cave, which adds another 15–20 minutes. The cave itself is modest — the falls are the draw.

Dambatenne Tea Estate Walk and Lipton’s Seat

Difficulty: Easy (walk within estate)
Duration: 1.5–2 hours at the estate
Getting there: 90 minutes by tuk-tuk from Ella (round trip with wait: LKR 2,000–3,000)

The Dambatenne Tea Estate is 15km from Ella and rises to Lipton’s Seat at around 1,970m. The estate road can be walked rather than driven for stretches, passing through rows of tea bushes and giving views back over the lowlands. Most visitors combine the walk with the estate factory tour.

From Lipton’s Seat itself, the view on a clear morning extends over multiple provinces. Visibility drops sharply after about 9am as cloud builds from the valley floors.

General Hiking Advice for Ella

Footwear: Grip-soled shoes or trail runners. Sandals are not suitable for Ella Rock or any trail with loose ground.

Timing: Aim to reach any summit by 8–9am at the latest. Ella’s afternoon cloud is reliable and blocks views for most of the day.

Water: Bring at least 1 litre per person. There are no water sources on any of the trails.

Navigation: Trails are not signposted to international standards. Offline maps (Maps.me works well here) downloaded before you leave your guesthouse make a significant difference.

Guides: Not required for Little Adam’s Peak or the Ravana Falls walk. Worth considering for Ella Rock. Available in town — ask at your guesthouse or the main street. Expect to pay LKR 2,000–3,000 for a half-day.

Mobile signal: Patchy on Ella Rock and on forest sections. Do not rely on Google Maps requiring a live connection.
