Where to Stay in Ella, Sri Lanka

Ella has no large resorts. Accommodation is almost entirely guesthouses, small hotels, and a handful of boutique eco-lodges, most of them family-run. The town is small enough that you can walk between most guesthouses and the main street in 10–15 minutes, but properties on the hillside above the main road have significantly better views than those on the street itself.

Budget: LKR 2,000–5,500 / $15–35 per night

Budget guesthouses are concentrated on and around Main Street. At the lower end of this range, expect fan rooms, cold showers, and possibly shared bathrooms. At the upper end, rooms are private with en suite bathrooms, though still basic.

The trade-off at street-level budget places is noise — Ella’s main road carries tuk-tuks and buses through the day and evening. If noise sensitivity matters, ask for a room at the back or look at places slightly off the main road.

Several budget guesthouses have rooftop or garden seating with good views over the Ella Gap — this is worth asking about when booking, as the views are part of the experience.

Breakfast is often included at guesthouses in this bracket (rice and curry, string hoppers, or toast with egg), though quality varies.

Midrange: $50–100 per night

In this range you get private bathrooms, air conditioning or efficient fans, and often a small restaurant or kitchen producing decent Sri Lankan food. A number of properties in this bracket sit on the hillside above town with views over the Ella Gap or toward the southern plains.

Eco-lodges fall mostly in this range. Several properties have been built to take advantage of the hillside terrain, with open-sided common areas and minimal construction footprint. Some have small plunge pools.

Luxury: $150–300+ per night

98 Acres Resort is the most established luxury property in Ella. Set on a working tea estate above the town, it has an infinity pool with views over the hills, a full restaurant, and colonial-style rooms and villas. Rates run from around $180 to $300+ depending on the season and room type. The pool and tea estate setting make it worth the premium for those who want comfort alongside the scenery.

Zion View sits on the Little Adam’s Peak side of town and has rooms with hill-facing views. It is smaller and less formal than 98 Acres, but the position is excellent.

What to Know Before Booking

Peak season: December to April and July to August. Ella fills up during these periods, particularly around Christmas and in January. Book 4–8 weeks ahead minimum during peak months. Rates in peak season are typically 30–50% higher than shoulder months.

Stay on the hillside: Properties on the main street are convenient for transport and restaurants, but properties set back on the hillside above town offer better views and more quiet. When searching, look for mentions of “valley view” or “gap view” in listings.

Breakfast included: Most guesthouses in Ella include breakfast. Check what is served — some offer only toast and egg at budget level; others serve proper Sri Lankan breakfast.

Getting around from your guesthouse: Ella is small. Even properties 1–2km from the main street are reachable on foot or by tuk-tuk for LKR 100–150.
