The Nine Arches Bridge is a stone railway viaduct about 2.5km from Ella town, cutting through dense jungle on the Kandy–Badulla line. Built during the British colonial period using only stone, brick, and cement — no steel — it spans a deep valley between two hills at approximately 24 metres high. Watching the blue train cross it against a backdrop of tea estates and forest is one of the most photographed moments in Sri Lanka.
The name is slightly misleading: the bridge has nine arches in total, but only six of them are full arches spanning the gorge — the others are at the abutment ends. The “Nine Arches” name has stuck regardless.
Getting There
The bridge is 2.5km from Ella town centre. Two options:
Walk the tracks: The majority of visitors walk from Ella along the railway line itself. It takes about 25–30 minutes at an easy pace. The walk passes through green hillside and feels very much part of the Sri Lanka highlands experience. Be aware that this is an active railway line — trains pass with limited warning noise on curves, so stay alert and step clear of the tracks when you hear one approaching.
Tuk-tuk: A short tuk-tuk ride from Ella town drops you at the access point near the bridge, costing around LKR 200–300. Useful if you want to time a specific train without rushing.
The Two Viewpoints
Upper viewpoint: A platform above the bridge on the hillside gives you a view looking down onto the full span of the bridge. This is the classic shot — all nine arches visible with the valley behind. Most photography is taken from here.
Lower path: A path drops below the bridge to give you a view of the arches from underneath. Less visited and worth exploring for architectural detail and different compositions, though you lose the sweeping valley backdrop.
Both viewpoints are worth visiting if you have time. The upper viewpoint fills quickly when a train is due.
Train Times and Crossing Times
The key moment everyone waits for is the train crossing. The most commonly cited times are approximately 9am for the northbound Ella–Kandy service and approximately 3–4pm for the southbound Kandy–Ella service — but these times shift seasonally and are not fixed.
Ask at your guesthouse the evening before for current train times. Most guesthouses in Ella keep a note of that week’s schedule. The departure board at Ella station (5 minutes from town) shows daily times. Arriving 20–30 minutes early gives you time to find a position at the viewpoint before it crowds.
If the train misses the sunlight window you wanted, the bridge is still a worthwhile sight without it.
Photography
Morning light (south face): The sun hits the south-facing side of the bridge in the morning, which illuminates the arches directly and creates good depth and shadow across the stonework. The 9am northbound service coincides well with this.
Afternoon light (north face): The afternoon sun moves around to the north side. The 3–4pm southbound service catches warm golden-hour light in the later months of the year.
Cloud cover: Sri Lanka’s hill country is frequently overcast, especially in the afternoon. Some of the most dramatic images of the bridge have been taken in light mist with cloud below the viaduct — don’t dismiss an overcast morning.
Crowds
The Nine Arches Bridge is extremely popular and tour groups from Ella hotels begin arriving from about 9am. If you want a relatively uncrowded experience, arrive by 8am. By 10am the upper viewpoint has dozens of people at it.
That said, the viewpoint is large enough that crowds don’t significantly ruin the experience — you can still get a clean shot of the train if you’re positioned before others.
Combining with Ella Rock
The path to Ella Rock starts near the Nine Arches Bridge area. The full Ella Rock hike (approximately 3–4 hours return) can be combined with a bridge visit in a single morning — start at the bridge early for the 9am train, then continue up towards Ella Rock before midday heat sets in.
