SriLankan Airlines has suspended all flights between Colombo and both Riyadh and Dammam in Saudi Arabia, citing a security incident at King Khalid International Airport and an ongoing assessment of conditions in the region. The airline’s notices, issued on 10 and 12 October 2026, state that services will remain suspended until at least 18 October 2026, with resumption conditional on conditions being judged suitable for commercial operations.
Which Routes Are Affected
Two separate SriLankan Airlines routes are suspended:
- Colombo (CMB) – Riyadh (RUH): suspended from 10 October until at least 18 October 2026
- Colombo (CMB) – Dammam (DMM): suspended from 12 October until at least 18 October 2026
Both announcements note that resumption depends on a safety assessment rather than a fixed calendar date. Given that wording, we recommend checking directly with SriLankan Airlines before travelling, as the suspension may extend beyond the 18 October date.
Who Is Affected
The suspensions primarily affect Sri Lankan migrant workers and their families travelling between Sri Lanka and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, one of the largest destination corridors for Sri Lankan overseas workers. Leisure and business travellers transiting through Riyadh or Dammam to onward Gulf or European connections are also affected.
Passengers holding SriLankan Airlines tickets on either route should contact the airline directly to arrange a rebooking or refund:
- Phone (Sri Lanka): 1979
- International: +94 11 777 1979
- WhatsApp (chat only): +94 74 444 1979
Alternative Options
Several carriers continue to operate between Colombo and Saudi Arabia. Air Arabia, flydubai (via Dubai), and IndiGo (via Indian cities) offer indirect connections. Passengers should compare available options and confirm current schedules before booking.
Other Gulf hubs (Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi) continue to be served by their respective carriers from Colombo with no reported disruption at the time of writing.
