Almost all international visitors to Sri Lanka arrive at a single airport: Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), located 30 km north of Colombo near Katunayake. A second international airport at Mattala Rajapaksa (HRI) near Hambantota exists but handles almost no scheduled traffic and is not a practical option.

The Main Airport: Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike is a single-terminal airport handling all international arrivals and departures. It is functional but not large — immigration queues can be lengthy during peak arrival times (multiple flights from the Gulf land between 4am and 7am). Have your ETA confirmation, passport, and first-night accommodation address ready.

Facilities on arrival: ATMs in the arrivals hall (use these rather than currency exchange desks for better rates), Dialog and Mobitel SIM card counters, hotel booking desks, and a few cafes.

Airlines Serving Sri Lanka

SriLankan Airlines

The national carrier flies from London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris, Rome, Zurich, Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Sydney, Melbourne, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kuala Lumpur, and other destinations. The London non-stop takes approximately 10.5 hours and is the most direct option from Europe.

SriLankan is a oneworld alliance member, which means frequent flyer points can be earned and redeemed across British Airways, Qatar Airways, and other oneworld partners.

Gulf Carriers

Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar Airways (via Doha), Etihad (via Abu Dhabi), and flydubai (via Dubai) all serve Colombo. These are consistently among the best-priced options from the UK, Europe, Australia, and North America due to the competitive Gulf carrier market. One-stop journey time from London via the Gulf is typically 12–14 hours total.

From Southeast Asia

Singapore Airlines (via Singapore) — a strong option from Australia and New Zealand. Singapore to Colombo is approximately 3.5 hours. Thai Airways routes via Bangkok.

From India

IndiGo, Air India, and SriLankan Airlines operate frequent services from Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and other Indian cities. Chennai to Colombo is just 1.5 hours — the shortest international route into Sri Lanka.

When to Book for the Best Deals

Peak season (December–March): The west and south coasts are in their dry season, and European winter drives demand. Book 4–6 months ahead for December–January travel. Fares can be 50–80% above shoulder prices during the Christmas and New Year window (December 15–January 10). Compare flights to Colombo across multiple airlines — prices can vary significantly between departure dates and booking platforms.

Cheapest months: May to September. The southwest monsoon brings rain to the west coast, but the east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, Pasikuda) and Hill Country are in their best weather. Lower demand means lower fares.

Shoulder periods (February–April, October–November): Book 2–3 months ahead. Good balance of reasonable fares and decent weather across most of the island.

Domestic Flights Within Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a small island — 435 km from north to south — and domestic flights are limited. Cinnamon Air and Helitours have operated seaplane and light aircraft services between Colombo (Bandaranaike water terminal near the city), Sigiriya, Dambulla, Batticaloa, and Trincomalee. Services are irregular and schedules change frequently — check current availability rather than building an itinerary around them.

For most travellers, overland transport (train, bus, or private driver) is the practical way to move around Sri Lanka. The Colombo to Kandy train takes 2.5–3 hours, Colombo to Galle is 2–3 hours by expressway, and a private driver covers most multi-day itineraries for USD $40–60 per day.

• Gulf carriers regularly undercut SriLankan Airlines on the London route by GBP 50–200, though the non-stop convenience has real value on a 10.5-hour flight
• Avoid the Christmas peak (December 15–January 10) — fares and accommodation prices spike simultaneously
• East coast itineraries in June–August combine the cheapest flights of the year with the best beach weather on that coast
• Book early for December–January — 4–6 months ahead is not excessive for this window
