Flights to Sri Lanka: Airlines, Routes, Prices and Airport Guide

Almost all international visitors arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), 30km north of Colombo near Katunayake. It is a single-terminal airport that handles all international traffic. A second international airport at Mattala Rajapaksa (HRI) near Hambantota exists but has almost no scheduled services and is not a practical option for most visitors.

Airlines Flying to Sri Lanka

SriLankan Airlines (flag carrier): flies from London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris, Zurich, Rome, Amsterdam, Male, Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Sydney, Melbourne, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kuala Lumpur, and others. For European travellers, the London non-stop is the most direct option.

From the Gulf hubs (one-stop via Middle East):

• Emirates via Dubai
• Qatar Airways via Doha
• Etihad via Abu Dhabi
• flydubai via Dubai

These are consistently among the best-priced options from the UK, Europe, Australia, and North America due to the competitive Gulf carrier market.

From Southeast Asia:

There are no non-stop flights from North America to Sri Lanka. The Gulf carriers via Dubai or Doha are the most common route for US and Canadian travellers.

Typical Fares

Prices vary considerably with booking timing, season, and airline. These are rough return fare ranges:

• From London: £400–900 return (economy). Cheapest on Gulf carriers via Dubai or Doha. SriLankan non-stop commands a premium.
• From Sydney/Melbourne: AUD $700–1,400 return. Singapore Airlines via Singapore is popular.
• From New York: $700–1,100 return. Via Gulf hubs typically.

Peak fares: December 15 to January 10 is the highest-priced period, coinciding with the peak west-coast dry season. Fares can be 50–80% above shoulder prices. Book four to six months ahead for travel in this window.

Best value timing: May to September, when the west coast is in monsoon season. Fewer tourists + lower demand = lower fares. This timing works well for east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee) or Hill Country itineraries that are not weather-dependent on the west.

• Shoulder season (February–April, October–November): Two to three months ahead is usually sufficient
• Off-peak (May–September): Four to six weeks ahead can work, though earlier is always safer for seat selection

Colombo Airport (CMB) — Practical Information

Terminal: Single international terminal. Arrivals on the ground floor, departures upper level.

After landing: Immigration and customs are straightforward. On entry, have your ETA confirmation accessible, passport, and accommodation address for the first night ready.

Facilities: ATMs in arrivals (use these for the best exchange rates on arrival rather than currency exchange desks), Dialog and Mobitel SIM card desks, hotel booking desks, and a few cafes.

Getting from the Airport to Colombo

By taxi (street taxi or metered): Agree the price before getting in if taking an unofficial taxi. Official airport taxi desks offer metered or fixed rates to Colombo city centre — approximately LKR 3,500–5,000. The cost is reasonable; the queue can be long during busy arrival periods.

By PickMe app: Download PickMe before arriving. Request a ride from the airport on the app — significantly cheaper than the airport taxi desk rate. Expect LKR 1,800–2,800 to central Colombo depending on traffic and surge pricing. The driver meets you in the designated rideshare area outside arrivals.

By private pickup: Many hotels and guesthouses offer airport pickup for a fixed fee ($15–25 for Colombo properties). Arrange in advance.

By train: A direct rail link from the airport to Colombo Fort station does not currently exist (as of 2026). Work on extending the rail network to Katunayake has been discussed but not completed. The practical option remains road-based.

Journey time to Colombo: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. The E03 expressway approach helps; the final stretch into central Colombo is subject to heavy congestion, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.
