Where to Stay in Galle, Sri Lanka

A restored colonial Dutch building converted to a boutique hotel inside Galle Fort, Sri Lanka

Galle accommodation divides clearly into two categories: inside the Fort (colonial atmosphere, higher prices, limited availability) and outside the Fort or in nearby beach areas (more options, lower prices, less character). Where you stay depends on your budget and what you want the stay to feel like.

Inside the Fort

Staying inside Galle Fort is the most atmospheric option. Guesthouses and hotels occupy restored Dutch-era buildings on the Fort’s narrow streets. Windows open onto centuries-old facades, breakfast is sometimes served on rooftop terraces above the ramparts, and the Fort’s cafes and restaurants are within walking distance of everything.

Inventory is limited. The Fort is not large, and the total number of accommodation beds within the walls is small. This means prices are higher than anywhere else in Galle and availability dries up quickly in peak months.

Budget to midrange inside the Fort: $80–150 per night. A handful of guesthouses and smaller boutique properties occupy restored buildings at these price points. Rooms vary — some have period features and colonial tile floors; others are more straightforward renovations. Check photos carefully before booking.

Luxury inside the Fort: $200–500+ per night. The notable properties at this level include:

  • Amangalla: The premier hotel inside the Fort, occupying the former New Oriental Hotel building (1684) on Church Street. Pool, spa, colonial common rooms, and a level of service commensurate with the Aman group’s positioning. Rates typically $350–500 per night in peak season.
  • The Fort Printers: A smaller boutique hotel on Pedlar Street, converted from a Dutch-era printing house. Six rooms, rooftop pool, attentive service. Rates around $200–350.
  • Galle Fort Hotel: On Church Street, a restored merchant house with 12 rooms, a courtyard restaurant, and views of the ramparts. Rates from $180–280.

Outside the Fort

The area immediately outside the Fort gate and around the main bus station has budget accommodation from around $25–60 per night. These are standard guesthouses and small hotels — functional, less character, but significantly cheaper. Walking to the Fort entrance takes 5–10 minutes from most of these properties.

Nearby Beach Options

Unawatuna (8km east): Offers a wider range of accommodation at most price points, from backpacker hostels at $20 per night to boutique guesthouses at $80–150. The beach is the draw — good swimming and snorkelling from November to April. Tuk-tuk to Galle Fort: 15 minutes, LKR 250–350.

Koggala and Tallpe (12–20km east): Quieter stretch of coast with fewer tourists than Unawatuna. Good for those who want beach access and can tolerate a slightly longer transfer to the Fort. Some larger beach hotels operate in this area.

Hikkaduwa (21km west): Another beach town with budget-friendly accommodation; less polished than Unawatuna but good for diving access. Tuk-tuk to Galle from here costs more — most visitors take the local bus.

What to Know Before Booking

January: The Galle Literary Festival takes place in late January. Fort accommodation sells out months in advance and prices increase significantly. If visiting in January for the festival, book as soon as tickets are announced.

December to March: Peak season. Book Fort accommodation 2–3 months ahead minimum. Prices are 30–50% above shoulder rates.

April to October: Shoulder to low season. Fort accommodation becomes available at shorter notice and rates are lower. The southwest monsoon affects the south coast, particularly May–July, with regular rain and rough seas.
