Nuwara Eliya’s highland position makes it an excellent base for a range of day excursions. The surrounding hill country contains some of Sri Lanka’s most dramatic scenery - Horton Plains’ sheer cliff edge, the Ramboda waterfall cascade, and the ridge-top drama of Haputale are all within a 90-minute drive. Horton Plains National Park and World’s End
Horton Plains is the standout day trip from Nuwara Eliya and one of the most memorable experiences in Sri Lanka’s hill country. The park protects the largest expanse of highland cloud forest in the country - a wind-swept plateau at 2,100–2,300m where the vegetation is low and wind-sculpted.
Distance: 32km southeast, approximately 45 minutes by vehicle.
Entry: Approximately USD $25 for foreigners, plus vehicle entry fee (as of 2026). No public buses directly serve the park gate - hire a vehicle.
The circular trail: From the park entrance, the circular route covers 9.5km through grassland and montane forest to World’s End (a 900m sheer drop), then continues to Baker’s Falls (a 20m cascade) before looping back. Allow 3–4 hours at a moderate pace. The path is clearly marked. Leeches are present after rain - carry salt or insect repellent, and tuck trousers into socks.
Timing is critical: Clear views at World’s End require arriving before 9–10am. Afternoon mist rolls in predictably; mid-morning arrivals frequently see nothing at the cliff edge. Leave Nuwara Eliya by 6:30am.
Wildlife: Sambar deer and endemic highland birds (Sri Lanka whistling thrush, dull-blue flycatcher) are commonly seen on the trail. The horton plains slender loris, an endemic primate, is nocturnal and rarely encountered in daylight.
Ramboda Falls
Ramboda Falls drops 109m in two main cascades beside the A5 highway, approximately 30km northwest of Nuwara Eliya on the road toward Kandy. The falls are visible from the road and accessible in minutes - there is a viewing platform and a small café nearby.
This is not a standalone day trip but works perfectly as a stop when travelling between Nuwara Eliya and Kandy, or as an add-on to a Horton Plains excursion on the return leg. A tuk-tuk from Nuwara Eliya to the falls and back costs approximately LKR 1,500–2,000.
The area is also home to the Ramboda Tunnel, an 818m highway tunnel cut through the mountains that opened in 2009 and shortened journey times considerably. Buses between Nuwara Eliya and Kandy pass by here - you can take a bus to the falls and return independently if timing permits.
Haputale
Haputale is a small hill town 45km south of Nuwara Eliya, perched on a narrow ridge at 1,431m. The town’s position is its main attraction - on clear mornings, the view from the ridge falls away to both the northern slopes and the southern coastal plains, with the horizon visible in both directions.
Getting there: Approximately 75 minutes by road. The hill country train (Nuwara Eliya station is actually at Nanu Oya, 10km from town) runs to Haputale via Ohiya, a scenic 2–3 hour journey on a well-regarded stretch of Sri Lanka’s rail network.
Dambatenne Tea Factory: Built by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1890, this is the original Lipton tea estate. Factory tours cover the same production steps as Nuwara Eliya’s estates but with the historical context of Lipton’s personal empire. Approximately LKR 700–1,000 for tours as of 2026.
Lipton’s Seat: A viewpoint at 1,970m, 8km above Dambatenne, where Thomas Lipton allegedly spent mornings overlooking his tea empire. A tuk-tuk from Haputale to both the factory and Lipton’s Seat costs approximately LKR 1,500–2,000 return (negotiate including waiting time). Clear mornings only - the view disappears with cloud.
Pidurutalagala (Sri Lanka’s Highest Peak)
At 2,524m, Pidurutalagala is Sri Lanka’s highest mountain, located 6km north of Nuwara Eliya. The summit is home to a military communications installation and is not open to the public - the approach road is blocked at the army checkpoint. This is a recurring misconception: the peak cannot be summited by tourists regardless of information to the contrary online.
The mountain is visible from Nuwara Eliya town and the surrounding area but should not be planned as a hiking destination.
Hakgala Botanical Gardens

Practical Tips
- Vehicle hire: A tuk-tuk for the day for a Horton Plains circuit (including Ramboda) costs approximately LKR 4,000–6,000. Negotiate before departure and confirm that the driver will wait at the park gate (often 3–4 hours).
- Private car with driver: Better if combining multiple stops - approximately LKR 7,000–10,000 for a full day as of 2026.
- Early starts are essential: Nuwara Eliya itself is cold in the early morning - dress in layers, as the highland temperature at 7am can be 8–12°C even in the dry season.
- Train to Haputale: Departs from Nanu Oya station (10km from Nuwara Eliya town, tuk-tuk there costs LKR 400–500). Book third-class observation car tickets in advance for the best views.
