Jaffna Music Festival

The Jaffna Music Festival is one of the clearest signals of the north’s cultural recovery in the years since the end of Sri Lanka’s civil conflict. Held annually in January, the three-day event brings Carnatic musicians, Bharatanatyam dancers, and contemporary Tamil artists to venues across Jaffna city. For visitors, it offers a rare opportunity to experience classical South Asian performing arts in their Sri Lankan Tamil context, in a city that was long inaccessible to tourists.

What’s in the Programme

The festival typically runs across multiple venues — the Jaffna Public Library, open-air stages, and community halls. The core programming includes:

• Carnatic vocal and instrumental concerts by artists from both Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu
• Bharatanatyam and Bharatam dance recitals, often featuring established choreographers
• Thavil and mridangam percussion performances
• Contemporary Tamil music acts, including fusion artists drawing on folk and film traditions
• Cultural exhibitions displaying Jaffna’s craft and artistic heritage

Many events are free or very low cost, funded through cultural organisations and government arts bodies. Check the programme on arrival or through the Jaffna Municipal Council’s communications in the weeks before the event.

Going to Jaffna

Jaffna sits at the northern tip of the island, roughly 400 km from Colombo. The overnight train from Colombo Fort (the Yal Devi) takes approximately eight to nine hours and is the most practical option for most travellers. A domestic flight from Colombo to Jaffna International Airport takes under an hour. SriLankan Airlines and FitsAir operate this route (verify availability before travelling, as schedules change seasonally).

What to Know Before You Visit

January is a dry month in the north and one of the better times to visit Jaffna. Temperatures are warm but manageable in the mornings and evenings. Most concerts are held in the evening when it is cooler.

Visitors should be aware that Jaffna remains a conservative community. Dress modestly when visiting temples and cultural sites. The city has grown considerably in terms of hotels and restaurants since the early 2010s, but accommodation is still limited — book ahead if your dates overlap with the festival.
