Sri Lanka Southwest Monsoon Begins: May 2026 Alert

The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka issued an amber weather alert on 13 May 2026, citing Department of Meteorology warnings for heavy rainfall across the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and the districts of Puttalam, Galle, and Matara. The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) and Disaster Management Centre (DMC) have both flagged elevated landslide risks in affected areas.

This marks the onset of Sri Lanka’s southwest monsoon season, which typically runs from May through September and delivers the heaviest rainfall to the western coast, the southern lowlands, and the central hill country.

Where the risk is highest

The hill country region — including Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, and Haputale — carries the greatest landslide exposure during this season. Mountain roads in these areas can close at short notice following heavy rain, and clearing times range from a few hours to several days depending on severity. The iconic Kandy–Ella train route is also subject to delays and occasional cancellations when track conditions deteriorate. We recommend booking refundable train tickets for this route in May and June, and treating schedules as approximate rather than fixed.

The western coast, including Colombo, Negombo, and the Mirissa area, sees significant seasonal rainfall but generally remains accessible. Colombo’s infrastructure handles monsoon conditions well; expect afternoon downpours rather than all-day disruption in the capital.

The east coast alternative

May through September is the best season on Sri Lanka’s east coast. Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa see their driest and sunniest months during this period, when the southwest monsoon does not reach the eastern seaboard. Surf conditions at Arugam Bay peak from June through August. Travelers with schedule flexibility who can shift their itinerary eastward will find significantly better weather and fewer visitors than on the west coast.

Practical steps for current travelers

Monitor the Department of Meteorology’s daily forecasts if we are traveling through the hill country. Build buffer days into itineraries that depend on mountain road routes. If connecting through Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport, the airport itself sits in the western lowlands and is generally operational during monsoon rain events, though flight delays can occur during severe weather.
