Sri Lanka's East Coast Opens: Arugam Bay Surf Season Begins

June flips the switch on Sri Lanka’s east coast. While the southwest — Colombo, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa — enters its monsoon months, the eastern strip from Trincomalee down to Arugam Bay moves into its driest, sunniest stretch of the year. For travellers willing to cross the island, June through September offers some of the most consistent beach and surf conditions in South Asia.

Arugam Bay is the focal point. Main Point delivers rides of 300 to 500 metres across three distinct sections, fed by consistent groundswells that travel across the Indian Ocean from the Roaring Forties and wrap around the bay throughout the season. June and early July offer strong conditions without the peak-season pressure that arrives from late July onward — if you want quality waves with fewer than 40 surfers in the lineup, the next few weeks are the window to visit. Trincomalee to the north offers a different experience: calm, clear water at Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches, whale shark sightings offshore in June and July, and a pace markedly slower than the surf scene further south. Average temperatures across the east coast run between 28°C and 32°C throughout the season, with offshore winds keeping mornings clean.

Getting there: the journey from Colombo or Kandy to Arugam Bay takes six to eight hours by bus or taxi via the inland highways. The road to Trincomalee is shorter from Dambulla or Anuradhapura. There is no direct coastal route from the southwest — a full day of travel is required to cross the island, and most visitors allocate at least three nights to make the journey worthwhile.

Sri Lanka extended its visa-free scheme in late May 2026: nationals of 40 countries — including the USA, UK, Germany, France, India and Australia — are now eligible for a free 30-day electronic travel authorisation (ETA). The ETA must still be applied for online at eta.gov.lk before departure; only the fee has been waived.
