Christmas in Sri Lanka means beach weather, a sizeable Catholic community and the most expensive fortnight of the year. The south and west coasts are dry and sunny at around 29-32°C, with the sea close to 28°C. Negombo and parts of Colombo have the strongest festive atmosphere, while the south coast sells a “Christmas on the beach” package of buffets and live music. The east coast is in monsoon and best avoided. Book flights and hotels by September if you can, because 22 December to 3 January is peak season everywhere that matters. For the wider picture, see our Sri Lanka in December guide and our new year’s eve guide.
What Christmas Actually Looks Like in Sri Lanka
Roughly 7 percent of Sri Lankans are Christian, most of them Roman Catholic, and the community is concentrated along the west coast from Colombo north through Negombo and Chilaw. Buddhism is the majority religion, so Christmas is not a national event the way Vesak is, but it is a public holiday and a visible one. Expect fairy lights on shopfronts, nativity scenes outside churches, carol singing and a lot of tinsel in shopping malls.
The photograph at the top of this page shows Colombo Town Hall wrapped in lights, which gives a fair sense of the scale: civic displays in the capital are bright and well attended, especially on the evenings of 24 and 25 December. Crowds gather around Galle Face Green and the Town Hall area for photographs, and street food vendors work the edges.
Christmas Day itself is a public holiday (see our public holidays guide). Banks and government offices close. Tourist infrastructure does not: hotels, beach restaurants, safari operators and tuk-tuk drivers all work, and many treat the period as their main earning window.
Where the Festive Atmosphere Actually Is
Negombo is the clear winner for authentic Christmas. The town is nicknamed “Little Rome” for its churches, and midnight mass on Christmas Eve at St Mary’s and St Sebastian’s draws full congregations that spill into the streets. Houses are lit up, and the fishing community along the lagoon decorates boats and homes. It is 30 km north of the airport, so it also works as an easy first or last night. Our Negombo guide covers where to eat and stay.
Colombo has the biggest hotel events and the best light displays. The Galle Face Green and Town Hall area is the place to be after dark. Five-star hotels run Christmas Eve gala dinners and Christmas Day lunches with turkey, ham and rice-and-curry stations side by side. See Colombo for neighbourhood details.
The south coast (Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama) is where most international visitors spend Christmas. The atmosphere is beach-bar rather than church-bell: festive buffets, live bands, sunset drinks and a countdown atmosphere that builds toward New Year. Galle Fort is the most photogenic, with a mix of Dutch colonial streets, small cafes and boutique hotels. Mirissa is livelier and louder.
Kandy and the hill country have decorations in hotels and a handful of churches with services in Sinhala, Tamil and English, but the mood is quieter. Nuwara Eliya, with its cool air and colonial-era hotels, is the nearest Sri Lanka gets to a traditional Christmas feel.

Cash machines occasionally run low over the holiday period, so withdraw rupees before 24 December. Sigiriya, Dambulla and the other archaeological sites stay open, though crowds are heavier than normal.

Where to Eat Christmas Dinner
Colombo hotels have the deepest festive buffet tradition. Hotel restaurants such as Verandah and 1864 at Galle Face Hotel have historically hosted Christmas Eve dinners, and Hilton Colombo, Courtyard by Marriott and Movenpick Colombo have all published Christmas Eve and Christmas Day menus in recent years. Published buffet prices in recent seasons have ranged from approximately LKR 8,000 to LKR 13,000 net per adult in Colombo’s five-star hotels (as of 2023 listings; 2026 menus are announced from November, so check each hotel’s own page). In Negombo, Jetwing Beach’s Sands restaurant is the best bet for a sit-down dinner; on the south coast, the restaurants at Weligama Bay Marriott and the beach cafes along Mirissa and Unawatuna set festive menus and take reservations by message. If you prefer a quieter evening, many Galle Fort cafes serve a Western-style Christmas lunch alongside seafood and rice and curry.
Whichever you choose, book by early December. Christmas Eve tables at well-known hotels sell out first.
One timing note: the December full moon falls around 24 December in 2026, so Unduvap Poya may coincide with Christmas Eve. Poya days restrict alcohol sales in shops and some bars, though licensed hotels generally still serve guests. Check the exact date on our public holidays page before you plan a toast.
Flights, Weather and Practicalities
Flights. Fares to Colombo are at their annual peak for departures between about 18 and 26 December. As a guide, return economy from London usually runs from approximately GBP 700-950 in the Christmas window, against roughly GBP 500-650 in November (as of 2026, indicative only). Fares tend to fall slightly if you can fly on the 27th or the 28th and return in the first week of January. Search early and compare on our flights to Sri Lanka guide or check current fares.
Weather numbers. Colombo averages about 31°C by day and 24°C at night in late December. Galle is similar with a sea temperature near 28°C. Rain is possible but short: Galle records about 10 rainy days and around 180 mm in December. The hill country is cooler, with Nuwara Eliya at roughly 18-20°C by day. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are wetter and rougher; avoid the east coast at Christmas. Our monsoon season guide explains why.
Entry requirements. Apply for your Sri Lanka ETA before you travel, and buy travel insurance before you book non-refundable hotels. Pack light cotton, sunscreen and one warm layer; see our packing list.
A Simple Christmas Week Plan
A workable seven-night shape is Negombo on 23-24 December for the mass and the lights, then a transfer south to Galle or Weligama for Christmas Day on the beach, and a few days on the coast with a whale-watching morning from Mirissa. If you prefer culture, swap the beach for Sigiriya and Kandy, then take the train to Ella. Browse guided tours across Sri Lanka and book whale watching two to three days ahead, because Christmas week sells out.
