For winter sun between November and February, Thailand wins on beach variety, island hopping and nightlife, and Sri Lanka wins on value, wildlife and a quieter coast. Both are dry and hot from December to February, with the sea near 28°C. The deciding factors are the kind of trip you want, how long you can fly, and whether you are travelling over Christmas. For a broader destination comparison, see our general Sri Lanka vs Thailand guide; this page covers winter sun specifically.

Weather: Almost a Tie, With Different Risks
In December and January the two are close. Sri Lanka’s west and south coasts have 30-32°C days and about 7 hours of sunshine in December (Weather2Travel averages for Galle show around 10 rainy days and a sea at 27.8°C), rising to about 8 hours in February. Thailand’s Andaman coast has 31-33°C days and a similar sea. See our December weather page for the Sri Lankan detail.
The risk differs by month. November is the biggest gap: Thailand’s Andaman side is mostly dry while Sri Lanka’s south is in its inter-monsoon, with afternoon showers. By contrast, Thailand’s Gulf islands such as Koh Samui and Koh Tao are wet through November and into December, so the choice for early winter is the Andaman. Both are reliable from January to March. Sri Lanka’s east coast is not an option until about March, while Thailand’s alternatives cover all four months.
Beaches: Variety Versus Value
Thailand has an enormous edge in choice. Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta and the Phi Phi islands offer limestone cliffs, boat trips and a dense choice of resorts at every price. Sri Lanka’s beaches are fewer but quieter and often wider: Bentota, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama and Tangalle. The south coast is easier to travel along, since one coastal road and rail line link everything, which cuts transfer time.
If you want one place to switch off, choose a south coast resort. Weligama Bay Marriott Resort & Spa is listed on Booking.com as a beachfront resort with six restaurants and bars, with ranges of roughly USD 130-360 across the year. For a hill-and-fort setting, Jetwing Lighthouse above Galle has two pools and a spa. See Weligama, Galle and Mirissa.
Cost: Sri Lanka Is Cheaper on the Ground
Food, local transport and mid-range hotels cost less in Sri Lanka outside 22 December to 3 January. A rice-and-curry lunch is approximately LKR 800-1,500, a short tuk-tuk ride approximately LKR 500-1,000, and Mirissa whale watching approximately USD 50-80 per person (as of 2026, indicative). Thailand’s islands become expensive over the festive window, particularly Phuket, Koh Samui and Krabi. Flights to Colombo can be slightly higher than Bangkok at the same time of year, so check both before you commit. Our flights guide covers fares, and you can check current fares to Sri Lanka.
Beyond the Beach: Wildlife and Culture
Sri Lanka packs more into a short trip. Within a day’s travel of the south coast you can reach Yala (high leopard density), Udawalawe (elephants), Mirissa whale watching from December to March and Galle Fort. A week-long beach holiday easily includes two or three day trips, and our Sri Lanka tours cover most of them. Thailand’s strengths are diving and snorkelling, island boat tours, street food and its cities. Both countries can be combined with a cultural leg, but Sri Lanka’s is closer to the beaches.
Nightlife and Atmosphere
If you want bars, beach clubs and late nights, Thailand is the answer. Sri Lanka’s south coast has a scene in Mirissa and Weligama, and Colombo has hotel bars and restaurants, but it is quieter and ends earlier. Families and couples tend to prefer Sri Lanka’s pace. See New Year’s Eve in Sri Lanka for what the party scene looks like.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Thailand if you want island hopping, strong nightlife, a November trip or the widest choice of resorts. Choose Sri Lanka if you want value, wildlife, a quieter coast and a mix of beach and culture, especially between December and February. If you can only travel in November, Thailand’s Andaman side is the safer pick; if you travel in January or February, both are excellent and Sri Lanka usually costs less.
