Jetstar Launches Melbourne–Colombo Direct from August 25

Jetstar Airways has confirmed it will launch direct flights between Melbourne (Tullamarine) and Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport from 25 August 2026. The service is the first nonstop route between Australia and Sri Lanka operated by a low-cost carrier.

The route will run three times a week initially. Outbound Melbourne–Colombo flights are scheduled overnight, while the return Colombo–Melbourne leg is timed to land in Melbourne in the morning. Flight time is approximately 11 hours.

Why this matters

Australian travellers to Sri Lanka have until now relied entirely on one-stop connections via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Doha, adding between three and five hours to journey times and often requiring separate bookings or longer layovers. A direct connection from Melbourne removes that friction and brings Sri Lanka into closer comparison with other South and Southeast Asian destinations in terms of both time and cost.

Introductory fares at launch were advertised from A$299 one-way. Jetstar’s standard low-cost model applies: base fares include carry-on luggage only, with checked baggage, meals, and seat selection available as add-ons. Factor these into any cost comparison with connecting full-service options.

Planning your arrival

Bandaranaike International Airport sits at Katunayake, approximately 35 kilometres north of central Colombo. The Colombo–Katunayake Expressway connects the airport to the city, with the journey taking around 40 minutes under normal conditions. Sri Lanka’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) remains required for Australian citizens. Apply through the official Sri Lanka ETA portal before departure; the fee is currently around US$20 for tourism visits. Avoid third-party sites that charge higher fees for the same document.

The route opens in late August, which falls in a transitional season. The southwest monsoon is winding down from the west coast and Colombo by mid-September, while the hill country around Kandy and the east coast remain accessible through August. Conditions vary significantly by region, so check the weather pattern against your planned itinerary.
