Sri Lanka’s West Coast Enters Prime Beach Season

The southwest monsoon that sweeps Sri Lanka’s west and south coasts from May to September is winding down. October marks the transition: rainfall totals drop, seas flatten, and the beaches from Colombo south through Bentota, Galle, Unawatuna, and Mirissa enter their most reliable period of the year. This window runs through to late April.

What Changes in October

During the southwest monsoon, the west coast beaches are exposed to swells generated across the Arabian Sea. Surfing conditions at spots like Hikkaduwa can be good during this period, but swimming and snorkelling are restricted at most sites, and some beach operations close. From October onwards:

  • Sea states calm rapidly as the monsoon retreats northward
  • Visibility for snorkelling and diving improves; Unawatuna and the Hikkaduwa reef are reliable from mid-October
  • Whale-watching season in the deep water off Mirissa runs from November through April; blue whales are present throughout, and sperm whales increase in frequency from December
  • Coastal hotels shift to peak-season pricing, particularly from mid-November through January

Which Beaches to Prioritise

Galle and its surrounding coast - Unawatuna, Dalawella, Jungle Beach - are most accessible from October. The fort town provides the best infrastructure in the south, with a compact area walkable from most accommodation options.

Mirissa draws more visitors for the whale-watching boats and has a quieter beach than Unawatuna. Note that the beach itself is narrow; most time is spent at the whale-watching pier or in the village.

Bentota offers a wide, sheltered beach with calm water ideal for swimming and water sports. It is 90 minutes south of Colombo by road or rail.

The East Coast Timing

Note that the east coast - Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, Nilaveli - follows an opposite weather pattern. The northeast monsoon that arrives in October–November brings rain and rough seas to the east, so that coast enters its off-season now. Arugam Bay’s surf season ends around October; the east coast reopens from April.

Planning Your Trip

Our practical guide covers visa requirements, transport options between the coast and the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura), and advice on budget planning. Most international flights arrive into Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB); the airport is on the west coast, making it straightforward to head directly south to the beach corridor from arrival.

Peak-season hotel rates take effect from around mid-November; booking accommodation on the south coast now rather than waiting tends to secure better prices and availability at smaller guesthouses.
