Jetstar Launches First Low-Cost Australia–Sri Lanka Direct in August

Jetstar will operate the first direct low-cost flights between Australia and Sri Lanka from 25 August 2026, giving Australian travellers an affordable and time-efficient path to Colombo without a connection through a third country.

The service operates three times a week between Melbourne (Tullamarine) and Bandaranaike International Airport. One-way launch fares started from AU$315 per person, and Jetstar has estimated the route will open more than 100,000 low-cost seats annually to Sri Lanka — a market that previously had no direct budget carrier option from Australia.

Why This Matters

Until now, Australian travellers flying to Sri Lanka had two choices: pay premium prices on SriLankan Airlines nonstop services, or book a lower fare with a stop in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Dubai. Jetstar’s entry changes the economics significantly for budget-conscious travellers and those visiting friends and family.

SriLankan Airlines Also Expanding

SriLankan Airlines is adding frequency on its own Colombo–Melbourne route simultaneously, bringing the total to 10 weekly services from 2 August 2026. The combined effect gives Australian travellers more choice at both ends of the price spectrum than at any point in the airline route’s history.
