Beijing Capital Airlines has restored its direct service between Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) and Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, with the route now operating in September 2026. The airline had suspended the route and the reinstatement adds Beijing Capital to an expanding roster of Chinese carriers serving Sri Lanka.
The restoration brings the total number of direct weekly flights connecting mainland China with Sri Lanka to approximately 23 scheduled services, spread across several carriers including Air China and China Eastern on trunk routes, and regional Chinese carriers operating lower-frequency connections.
China as a Key Source Market
China is one of Sri Lanka’s priority tourism source markets, and the growth in direct air connections reflects a deliberate push by both governments to make travel between the two countries easier. Sri Lanka restarted post-pandemic aviation outreach to Chinese carriers in 2023, and the number of weekly China–Sri Lanka seat capacity has roughly tripled since then.
For visitors coming from China, the direct Beijing–Colombo routing removes the need to connect through a third hub — previously the only option when Beijing Capital suspended its service.
What This Means for Route Connections
Beijing Capital Airlines operates an extensive domestic Chinese network from Beijing Capital Airport, connecting cities across northern, central, and western China. The restored Colombo service is reachable from dozens of Chinese cities via an intra-China connection at Beijing.
The Beijing Capital hub at PEK is distinct from the newer Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX), which serves other carriers’ China–South Asia routes. Passengers booking via Beijing Capital should confirm their departure terminal in Beijing.
Travelling Between Colombo and Beijing
Bandaranaike International Airport is Sri Lanka’s main gateway, located approximately 35 km north of Colombo city centre. Transfer to Colombo by taxi takes around 40–60 minutes depending on traffic; the airport expressway has reduced journey times considerably from earlier years.
Direct flight time between Beijing and Colombo is approximately 8.5 hours eastbound and 9–10 hours westbound, depending on winds. The route operates in both Business and Economy cabins.
Sri Lanka’s Aviation Context
Sri Lanka’s air connectivity has improved substantially since 2023. Alongside the Chinese carriers, there has been expansion from Middle Eastern hubs (Emirates, Air Arabia, flydubai) and a modest recovery in European charter traffic. SriLankan Airlines itself has been expanding its regional network.
