Sri Lanka has been ranked the world’s leading wellness tourism destination for 2026 in a new report by BookRetreats, an international retreat booking platform. The report records a 100 percent year-on-year increase in global interest in Sri Lanka’s wellness offering, outpacing Turkey, Peru, France and Slovenia to take the top position.

The ranking adds to a strong year of international recognition — Sri Lanka also placed first in Big 7 Travel’s World’s Best Islands list and received a Tourism Broadcast of the Year award at the Inspire Global Media Awards in London.

What’s driving the surge

Three factors stand out in the BookRetreats data:

Ayurveda credentials. Sri Lanka has practised Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. Certified wellness centres throughout the country — particularly concentrated in Bentota, Beruwela and Kandy — operate under qualified physicians trained in both traditional and modern practices. The island’s traditions predate most wellness trends by millennia, which gives it an authenticity that newer destinations can’t replicate.

Streamlined entry. Since 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries — including India, the United States, the United Kingdom and most of the EU — receive a free 30-day tourist ETA rather than paying the previous USD 20 fee. Our Sri Lanka visa guide has the full country list and application steps. Lower friction at entry directly encourages spontaneous and shorter wellness retreats, which the BookRetreats data reflects.

Pricing. A week-long Ayurveda programme in Sri Lanka typically runs from approximately USD 700–1,800 depending on accommodation grade, as of 2026. That compares favourably with equivalent programmes in Germany or Switzerland, where a week of clinical Ayurveda can exceed EUR 3,000. Budget-conscious travellers have noticed.

Where to go

The southwest coast — particularly Bentota and Beruwela — hosts the highest concentration of established Ayurvedic resorts. Both are roughly 60–80 km south of Colombo (around 90 minutes by car), making them easy to reach from Bandaranaike International Airport. Our Bentota accommodation guide covers options across the full price range, from guesthouses to full-service Ayurvedic resorts.

Kandy offers a mountain-climate alternative, with several retreats combining Ayurveda with forest walks and temple visits. Ella and the hill country have a small number of yoga-focused retreats suited to visitors combining wellness with the scenic train journey.

Our southern coast itinerary includes accommodation options in the Bentota area if you want to build a wider trip around a wellness stay.

Practical notes

  • Most reputable programmes require a minimum 5–7 night stay for full panchakarma treatment cycles; shorter stays are available but cover less intensive treatments
  • Qualified retreat centres will carry certification from the Department of Ayurveda, Sri Lanka — ask to see it before booking
  • July sits in the southwest monsoon, which means some afternoon rain in coastal areas; the actual retreat experience is mostly indoors and unaffected
  • Confirm what’s included in the package rate: consultation, treatments, accommodation, and meals are sometimes itemised separately
