SriLankan Airlines will increase its Colombo–Melbourne route from seven to ten weekly flights starting 2 August 2026, adding three new services on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The expansion makes Melbourne one of the most frequently served long-haul destinations in the airline’s network and shortens effective wait times for travellers who’ve previously had to plan around limited days.

What’s changing

The three new frequencies operate on a fixed schedule:

  • Colombo departure (UL608): 14:10 local time, arriving Melbourne at 04:30 the following morning
  • Melbourne return (UL609): 06:00 local time on Wednesdays, Fridays and Mondays, arriving Colombo at 12:15

The existing seven-times-weekly service continues alongside the additions, giving ten total weekly connections between Bandaranaike International Airport and Melbourne Tullamarine.

Why this route matters

Australia has become one of Sri Lanka’s fastest-growing inbound markets. The Sri Lankan diaspora — concentrated heavily in Victoria and New South Wales — generates substantial visiting-friends-and-relatives traffic, while leisure tourism from Australia has grown steadily as Sri Lanka’s international reputation recovers post-2022. The airline cites both diaspora demand and growing interest from Australian leisure travellers in destinations such as Colombo, Kandy and the southern coast.

Ticket prices on the route vary by season. As a rough guide, economy fares on the Melbourne–Colombo sector have been running from approximately AUD 650–900 return booked in advance during the low season (June–September), with higher pricing around the December–January peak. Best time to visit from Australia

If you’re flying in from Melbourne, July and August sit comfortably in Sri Lanka’s east coast dry season. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are at their best — calm seas, full sunshine — while the southwest (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa) is mid-monsoon and wetter than ideal for beach time.
