The best beaches in Sri Lanka are Mirissa and Unawatuna on the south coast from November to April, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay on the east coast from April to September, plus Tangalle and Hiriketiya for quieter sand and surf. Pick by coast and month, because the two monsoons make beach choice a timing question. Prices below are approximate, as of 2026.
1. Mirissa - Best for a classic south coast bay
Mirissa’s main beach is an 800-metre arc of sand on a bay partly sheltered by Parrot Rock, which keeps the water calm in the dry season (November to April). Sunbed pairs rent for about LKR 300 to 500. There are no lifeguards, so swim in calm conditions and watch the currents.
For quieter sand, walk 15 minutes west past the fishing harbour to Secret Beach, which has no facilities. Polhena, 8 km east near Matara, is where we send people for turtle snorkelling. Read our full guide to Mirissa beaches and the Mirissa city guide. Whale boats leave from here too, see whale watching in Mirissa.
Best time: November to April. Local tip: snorkel Polhena in the morning, when the turtles are most reliably seen. Search Mirissa stays or browse Mirissa tours.
2. Unawatuna - Best for swimming and snorkelling near Galle
Unawatuna is a 1 km horseshoe bay, 6 km east of Galle, sheltered by headlands at both ends. That shape keeps wave action low for most of the year, so children and non-swimmers can enter the water comfortably in the central section. Sunbeds cost LKR 300 to 500 a day, usually with a minimum food or drink order.
The better snorkelling is at Jungle Beach, a 20-minute walk east over the headland, where a coral reef sits in shallow water close to the rocks. Arrive before 10am for the cove largely to yourself. Details are in our Unawatuna beaches guide, and the Galle Fort walk is a short ride away.
Best time: November to April. Local tip: return from Jungle Beach via the Japanese Peace Pagoda for sunset over the bay. Find Unawatuna stays or book Unawatuna tours.
3. Nilaveli - Best beach in July and August
Nilaveli sits 16 km north of Trincomalee and is arguably the finest beach on the east coast: calm turquoise shallows and several kilometres of sand in the dry season. The main draw beyond the beach is Pigeon Island National Park, a short boat ride offshore. A shared boat costs around LKR 1,500 to 2,000 per boat (4 to 6 people), and snorkel gear rents for LKR 300 to 500.
A tuk-tuk from Trincomalee town costs LKR 600 to 900 one way. Most properties close or cut service between October and March, when conditions deteriorate. Read the Trincomalee beaches guide and the Trincomalee city guide. The Sri Lanka Tourism Board’s east coast page gives an official overview.
Best time: April to September. Local tip: book the Pigeon Island boat early in the day, before the water gets choppy. Browse Trincomalee tours.
4. Arugam Bay - Best for surfers and long, empty sand
Arugam Bay is a small village on the south-east coast, 320 km from Colombo by road, and Sri Lanka’s best-known surf destination. Main Point, a right-hand point break just south of the village, can run for 200 to 300 metres. The surf season runs April to October, the opposite of the south coast.
Non-surfers come for the long, uncrowded beach, a crocodile-spotting trip on Pottuvil Lagoon (about USD 15) and elephants at Lahugala National Park. Buses from Colombo (Pettah) to Pottuvil take about eight hours, then a tuk-tuk to the village costs LKR 200 to 400. See the Arugam Bay guide and the surfing in Arugam Bay guide.
Best time: April to October. Local tip: a meal at a local restaurant runs about LKR 600 to 1,500, so eating in the village is cheap. Arugam Bay stays are easy to compare.
5. Tangalle - Best for quiet beaches and turtle nights
Tangalle is a fishing town 186 km from Colombo (about 3.5 hours by expressway) and noticeably quieter than Unawatuna or Mirissa. Marakolliya, 3 km east of town along a rough road, is a long, nearly empty beach with coarser sand and larger waves, good for walking rather than swimming.
At Rekawa, 12 km west, five species of sea turtle nest between May and September. Guided night walks (roughly 8pm to midnight) cost about USD 15 per person. Our Tangalle city guide covers the beaches and day trips, including Udawalawe and Bundala.
Best time: November to April for the sea, May to September for turtles. Local tip: tuk-tuks between town and the beaches run LKR 150 to 300. Tangalle tours and Tangalle stays are linked here.
6. Hiriketiya - Best beginner surf bay
Hiriketiya is a horseshoe bay about 400 metres wide, 3 km from Dikwella. The central beach break runs most mornings from November to April, with mellow chest-to-head-high waves that break slowly enough for beginners. Group lessons cost roughly LKR 4,000 to 6,000 for two hours with board and rash vest (as of 2026).
The whole village is walkable in 10 minutes. Book lessons for 7 to 9am, when conditions are typically cleaner. See the Hiriketiya guide and Hiriketiya tours.
Best time: November to April.
7. Pasikuda - Best shallow lagoon for families
Pasikuda is on the east coast, about 35 km north of Batticaloa and 285 km from Colombo. A flat offshore reef creates a lagoon roughly 1 km long, with water at 27 to 29°C and a clean sandy seabed. At low tide large areas are knee-deep, so families can wade far out.
Kalkudah, a 15-minute walk north, is longer, quieter and has fewer facilities. The drive from Colombo takes 6 to 7 hours, and a driver costs roughly LKR 15,000 to 20,000 one way. See the Pasikuda guide and Pasikuda tours.
Best time: April to September.
How to choose
Match the coast to the month, then pick the style: swimming (Unawatuna, Pasikuda), snorkelling (Polhena, Jungle Beach, Pigeon Island), surf (Arugam Bay, Hiriketiya) or solitude (Tangalle). Our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide lays out the monsoon calendar.
