Sri Lanka packs more beach variety into a small island than most countries manage in a whole coastline: surf bays, flat reef lagoons, whale-watching coves, long empty stretches of sand and sheltered coral snorkelling spots. The catch is timing. The island sits between two monsoons, so the best beach in December is rarely the best beach in July. This guide ranks the main beaches by coast and season so you can pick the right shore for your dates. For a deeper look at one region, our south coast beaches guide goes beach by beach from Hikkaduwa to Tangalle.
Which coast when: the season rule
- November to April: south and west coasts (Negombo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama, Hiriketiya, Tangalle). Calm seas, clear skies, peak crowds from late December to February.
- May to September: east coast (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Uppuveli, Pasikuda, Kalkudah, Arugam Bay). Flat seas and the best visibility, while the southwest monsoon closes many south coast beach shacks.
- October and November: inter-monsoon, with afternoon thunderstorms everywhere. The south coast starts reopening and the east coast starts to turn.
Our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide has the month-by-month detail, and you can check the national forecast with the Sri Lanka Tourism board{target=“_blank”}. For route planning, see our southern coast itinerary.
South and west coast beaches (November to April)
Unawatuna: best for easy swimming
A curved bay protected by reef on both sides gives Unawatuna the calmest swimming on the south coast, and Galle Fort is a short tuk-tuk ride away. The main beach is busy and lined with restaurants. For something quieter walk to Jungle Beach (snorkelling) or the palm-backed Dalawella (Coconut Beach), where the swing photo spot sits just up the road. Our Unawatuna beaches guide covers each cove, and you can compare hotels in Unawatuna by price and sea view.
Mirissa: best all-rounder and whale watching
Mirissa has the postcard arc of sand, a lively but relaxed beach-bar scene and the main departure point for blue whale trips between roughly November and April. Swimming is good on the sheltered western end and the surf can be strong elsewhere. Read the Mirissa beaches guide and the whale watching guide, then book Mirissa tours in advance for peak weeks. Hotels in Mirissa fill up first in January and February.
Hikkaduwa: best for turtles and snorkelling from shore
The oldest tourist beach in Sri Lanka is not the prettiest, but Hikkaduwa Marine National Park offers reliable sea turtle sightings close to the sand and an easy reef for snorkelling. The surf break works for intermediates. See the Hikkaduwa guide and where to stay in Hikkaduwa. If you want the full ranking, compare it directly in Hikkaduwa vs Mirissa.
Hiriketiya: best for surf and couples
The horseshoe cove at Hiriketiya (Dickwella) is small, photogenic and has a reliable surf wave that suits intermediates. Space is limited, so book early in peak season. Start with the Hiriketiya guide and look at Hiriketiya stays. Beginners usually do better at the long beach of Weligama.
Tangalle: best for space and quiet
Long, wide, mostly undeveloped beaches with small coves make Tangalle the south coast’s answer to the crowds. Currents can be strong on the open stretches, so choose protected coves for swimming. See the Tangalle guide.
Bentota: best for resorts, water sports and river trips
Bentota is a wide, golden beach on the west coast with a river mouth, water sports and a long run of resorts. It is a smart base for a family beach holiday close to Colombo. See Bentota and Bentota hotels. Swim in the calmer section, and heed any red flags at the river mouth.
Negombo: best for a first or last night
Negombo is convenient rather than spectacular: a long beach, fishing boats, seafood restaurants and a 30 to 45 minute transfer from the airport. We recommend it for jet lag, not for swimming. See Negombo and Negombo hotels.
East coast beaches (May to September)
Nilaveli and Uppuveli: best for clear water and Pigeon Island
Near Trincomalee, Nilaveli has a long white-sand beach and the boat departures for Pigeon Island National Park, where snorkellers regularly see reef fish and blacktip reef sharks. Uppuveli is closer to town, with more cafes and guesthouses. Read the Trincomalee guide for beach-by-beach advice, check Trincomalee hotels and browse Trincomalee tours. The park is run by the Department of Wildlife Conservation{target=“_blank”}, so check current fees and opening rules before you go.
Pasikuda and Kalkudah: best for flat, shallow water
Pasikuda’s reef-protected lagoon is shallow and calm enough for children, with resort stretches along the bay. Kalkudah, next door, is quieter and more open. Both are best from May to September. See our Pasikuda and Kalkudah guide and Pasikuda hotels.
Arugam Bay: best for surf and a beach-town mood
Arugam Bay is the island’s top surf destination, with a reliable season from roughly May to September. The main beach is for lounging, and the point breaks for surfing are a short tuk-tuk ride away. Swimming is for calm days only. See the Arugam Bay guide, surfing in Arugam Bay and Arugam Bay hotels.

Safety and practical tips
- Rip currents are the main danger on the south and west coasts. Swim where there are lifeguards or other swimmers, and stay out when waves are large.
- Dress code: Sri Lanka is conservative away from the main tourist beaches. Bikinis are normal at resort beaches, but cover up in towns and near temples. See our etiquette guide.
- Sun: the sun is strong year-round at 6 to 9 degrees north, so bring reef-safe sunscreen.
- Marine life: keep your distance from turtles and do not stand on coral. Choose operators who follow whale-watching guidelines.
- Prices (as of 2026): guesthouses are typically from around USD 25 to 60 a night, mid-range hotels USD 80 to 150, and boutique or resort stays above that. Compare options through Sri Lanka hotels and browse Sri Lanka tours for snorkelling, whale watching and boat trips.
Pairing coasts in one trip
If you have two weeks you can combine coasts in one visit. In the shoulder months of late April and October the weather can be mixed on both, so plan flexible days. A common approach in January is the south coast plus the hill country, while a July trip pairs Trincomalee or Arugam Bay with the Cultural Triangle. See our two weeks in Sri Lanka route for how to fit beaches around sightseeing.
